history
After forcing the last Qing emperor 溥仪 to abdicate in February 1912, Yuan took the ROC presidency from 孙中山. In December 1915 he declared a new 中华帝国 with himself as Emperor 洪宪. Provincial revolts forced him to rescind the monarchy within 83 days; he died of uremia six months later.
culture
In Chinese historical memory Yuan is the near-archetype of the 窃国大盗 (‘state-stealing brigand’) who betrayed the republic. His name is also attached to the silver dollar coins (袁大头) that circulated widely in early-Republican China and are still collected today.
