Proclaimed on 1 January 1912 after the Xinhai Revolution ended 2,000+ years of imperial rule. After losing the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the ROC government retreated to Taiwan, where its year calendar is still in use (e.g. 民国114年 = 2025).
