茧子 most commonly means a callus on a hand or foot — the colloquial form of
茧 (jiǎn). The same character also means 'silkworm cocoon', because both share the idea of a tough protective layer formed by repeated activity. The synonym
趼子 (jiǎnzi) is also used in some regions for foot calluses.
