稗 is rare as a free word in modern Chinese. It names barnyard grass, a rice-like weed, and by extension anything petty or unofficial — hence
稗官野史 (unofficial histories). It joins the grain radical
禾 with
卑 (lowly), which gives both the sound and the sense of insignificance.
