The yak (
牦牛) is uniquely adapted to high altitudes (3,000-5,500 m) and central to Tibetan and Himalayan life: it provides milk, butter (
酥油), meat, hide, wool, and dung for fuel. Its long shaggy hair is reflected in
牦 itself, whose original sense was 'yak's tail-hair'.
