海椒 is the Sichuan and southwestern dialect word for chili pepper. The standard Mandarin term is
辣椒 (làjiāo). The
海 (sea) prefix reflects the historical fact that chilies arrived in China by sea from the Americas in the late Ming dynasty — many imported things picked up
海 or
番 prefixes.
