Opened in 1908 by a British-financed concession, the line linked (Hù, Shanghai) and (Níng, short for /Jiāngníng, i.e. Nanjing). Today the corridor is served by the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line and the dedicated Shanghai-Nanjing intercity railway.
