history
Opened in 1908 by a British-financed concession, the line linked 沪 (Hù, Shanghai) and 宁 (Níng, short for 江宁/Jiāngníng, i.e. Nanjing). Today the corridor is served by the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line and the dedicated Shanghai-Nanjing intercity railway.
memory
Chinese railways are usually named by gluing the abbreviated city codes: 沪 (Shanghai) + 宁 (Nanjing) = 沪宁. Same pattern as 京沪 (Jīng-Hù, Beijing-Shanghai) and 京广 (Jīng-Guǎng, Beijing-Guangzhou).
