Route names join one-character city abbreviations: 沪 for 上海 and 宁 for 南京, as in 沪宁高速, the Shanghai-Nanjing expressway. Compare 京沪 (Beijing-Shanghai).

mistakes

宁 can also stand for 宁夏. Paired with Shanghai it is Nanjing, from the city's old name 江宁; Ningbo is 甬, never 宁.
