The name reads 'without tin' (无 + 锡). A popular story says the tin of nearby 锡山 was mined out by the Han dynasty; the name may instead record a word of the ancient Wu language. The full city name 无锡市 has its own entry.

A silk and rice-trading town on the northern shore of 太湖, Wuxi became one of the cradles of modern Chinese industry in the late Qing and early Republic. The cherry blossoms at 鼋头渚 on the lakeshore draw crowds every spring.
