沈阳市 (ShěnyángShì): Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province

Called 盛京 (Shèngjīng) during the early Qing, when it served as the Manchu capital before the move to Beijing in 1644. The Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫) remains a UNESCO site. Shenyang is also associated with the 九一八事变 (Mukden Incident, 1931) that began Japan's invasion of northeast China.

Simplified 沈 vs. traditional 瀋: the Shenyang/Shenyang-river 沈 is a merged form. Mainland 沈阳 is always 沈 in simplified text; Taiwan and CC-CEDICT use 瀋陽 in traditional.
