Ethnic Tujia from Fenghuang, Hunan. After 1949 he abandoned fiction under political pressure and reinvented himself as an expert on ancient Chinese textiles — his《中国古代服饰研究》is still a landmark reference. Reportedly came very close to winning the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature.
