The tiger-slaying scene (景阳冈打虎) is one of the most-retold episodes in Chinese fiction - a drunk Wu Song pounds a tiger with his fists after his staff shatters. His revenge against his brother Wu Dalang's murderers (Pan Jinlian and Ximen Qing) is equally famous and scandalously detailed in 金瓶梅.

The character goes back to Song-era storytellers; Shi Nai'an systematized him into 水浒传 as one of the 108 Liangshan heroes (三十六天罡星 'Heavenly Harm Star').
