Emerged in the late Han and matured in the Tang. The four canonical Tang masters are 欧阳询, 颜真卿, 柳公权, and later 赵孟頫 (Yuan) — together the 楷书四大家.

One of the five main scripts (五体): 篆书 seal, 隶书 clerical, 楷书 regular, 行书 running, 草书 cursive. Kaishu is the model for printed fonts — the name 楷 itself means 'model / exemplar'.
