Joined TCL in 1982 when it was a small cassette-tape factory. His 2004 acquisitions of Thomson's TV business and Alcatel's mobile unit made TCL one of the earliest Chinese firms to attempt global expansion - though both deals initially lost heavily before the company recovered.
