Mandarin is based on the Beijing dialect but is not identical to it. China has hundreds of dialects; 普通话 was promoted as the national standard to enable communication across regions.
usage
In Taiwan, Mandarin is called 国语 (guóyǔ, 'national language'), and in Southeast Asia it's often called 华语 (huáyǔ, 'Chinese language').
