usage
晚清 usually covers about seventy years, from the 鸦片战争 of 1840 to the 辛亥革命 of 1911, and often stands before a noun, as in 晚清小说 'late-Qing fiction'. 清末 is close but leans toward the final years. 晚 'late' makes period words the same way in 晚唐 and 晚明.
culture
鲁迅 called the satirical fiction of the period 谴责小说 'novels of exposure'. The four best known, 《官场现形记》, 《二十年目睹之怪现状》, 《老残游记》 and 《孽海花》, are called the 晚清四大谴责小说.
