Tips

history
By 李宝嘉 (1867–1906), serialized in his own Shanghai newspaper from 1903 to 1905, in 60 chapters of loosely linked episodes about officials who buy their posts, take bribes and fawn on their superiors. Lu Xun counted it among the four late-Qing 谴责小说 'novels of exposure', with 老残游记.
memory
现形 is what a demon does in front of a magic mirror, the 照妖镜: it is forced to show its true shape. The title promises the same for 官场, the world of officials.
