长 as a suffix means 'chief / head of': 校长 (principal), 院长 (dean), 部长 (minister), 市长 (mayor), 所长 (institute director).
mistakes
Two readings. As a job title it is suǒzhǎng, the head of an institute or a police station. Read suǒcháng, 所长 is a different word meaning what someone is good at, which is the sense in 各有所长, everyone has their own strengths.
