Fought in 751 CE in the valley of the Talas River (modern-day Kyrgyzstan/Kazakhstan border). Tang general Gao Xianzhi (高仙芝) was defeated by Abbasid forces. The standard Western telling adds that Chinese POWs introduced papermaking to the Islamic world; historians debate how clean that link really is.
