The ten 天干 'Heavenly Stems' (甲, 乙, 丙 and so on) pair with the twelve 地支 'Earthly Branches' (子, 丑, 寅 and so on) to make sixty names, from 甲子 to 癸亥, and then the cycle starts again. That is why a 60th birthday is called 花甲.
