history
At 440,000 m², 天安门广场 is one of the world's largest city squares. It was enlarged to its current size in 1958-59 for the 10th anniversary of the PRC. Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic from the gate tower on October 1, 1949.
culture
The square is bordered by 天安门 (north), 主席纪念堂 Mao Memorial (south), 人民大会堂 Great Hall of the People (west), and the 国家博物馆 National Museum (east). The 人民英雄纪念碑 Monument to the People's Heroes sits in the center. Daily flag-raising at sunrise draws crowds.
