history
Founded by Varangian (Viking) prince Rurik in the 9th century, with Kyiv as its capital. Its peak was under Yaroslav the Wise (early 11th c.); it fragmented and was finally crushed by the Mongol invasion of 1240. Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus all claim it as historical heritage — a politically sensitive topic.
