He is said to have answered everything with 好 "good", even when someone told him their son had died, which makes him the first 好好先生, a person who never disagrees with anyone. His nickname was 水镜 "Water Mirror", for his clear judgement of people.

His words to 刘备, that only outstanding men understand the times, live on as the saying 识时务者为俊杰. The two such men he named lived nearby: 伏龙 "Crouching Dragon", better known as 卧龙, and 凤雏 "Young Phoenix", that is 诸葛亮 and 庞统.
