Beijing (
北京, literally "Northern Capital") is one of four provincial-level municipalities (
直辖市) directly under the central government. Short name:
京. It has served as imperial capital under the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and is home to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the Great Wall's most visited section (Badaling).
