Founded 1952 in the post-1949 Soviet-style reshuffle of Chinese universities, created by merging the aeronautics departments of eight existing schools. One of the original 'Seven Sons of National Defense' (
国防七子) — China's top defense-industry universities — and the training ground for most PLA and commercial aerospace engineers.
