Nanjing University traces its lineage to 1902, when it was founded as
三江师范学堂. Through successive renamings it became
国立中央大学 (the Republic of China's national flagship university) before being reorganized as
南京大学 in 1950. It is one of the C9 League schools and is especially strong in astronomy, physics and Chinese literature.
