司马迁 divided the
史记 into five parts:
本纪 for emperors,
表 for chronological tables,
书 for treatises,
世家 for noble houses and
列传 for everyone else of note, from generals to assassins. Later official histories kept the
本纪 and
列传, which is why the form is called
纪传体.
