Tips

history
Starting 23 August 1958, the PLA fired roughly 470,000 artillery shells at the ROC-held islands of Kinmen (金门) and Matsu () over 44 days. The shelling later settled into a bizarre 'odd-day-only' pattern that lasted into 1979. On Taiwan it is also called 金门 (Jīnmén Pàozhàn) 'Kinmen Artillery Battle'.
culture
After the war, Kinmen turned the millions of leftover shell casings into 金门菜刀 (Jīnmén càidāo) 'Kinmen kitchen knives' — a famous local product to this day.
