history

Starting 23 August 1958, the PLA fired roughly 470,000 artillery shells over 44 days at the islands of Kinmen (金门) and Matsu (马祖), held by Taiwan. The shelling later settled into an odd-days-only pattern that lasted until 1979. It is also called 金门炮战 'Kinmen Artillery Battle', the name more common in mainland China.

After the war, Kinmen turned the millions of leftover shell casings into 金门菜刀 'Kinmen kitchen knives' - a famous local product to this day.
