Starting 23 August 1958, the PLA fired roughly 470,000 artillery shells at the ROC-held islands of Kinmen (
金门) and Matsu (
马祖) over 44 days. The shelling later settled into a bizarre 'odd-day-only' pattern that lasted into 1979. On Taiwan it is also called
金门炮战 (Jīnmén Pàozhàn) 'Kinmen Artillery Battle'.
