From Gong Zizhen's (龚自珍) late-Qing poem 《己亥杂诗》 (1839): 九州生气恃风雷，万马齐喑究可哀。我劝天公重抖擞，不拘一格降人材 - 'The vitality of the Nine Provinces depends on storms of thunder; ten thousand horses falling silent is truly sad. I urge the Lord of Heaven to rouse himself again and send down talent without sticking to one mold.' A cry for reform and fresh human resources.
