A native of Putian (
莆田) in Fujian, Huang Tao passed the imperial examinations late in life and rose to the post of imperial censor (
御史). He is regarded as a foundational figure in Fujian literary culture and is often credited with helping make Fujian a center of learning in subsequent dynasties.
