Closing line of Liu Changqing's (
刘长卿, mid-Tang) 《
逢雪宿芙蓉山主人》 ('Lodging at Furong Mountain in a Snowstorm'):
日暮苍山远,
天寒白屋苍。
柴门闻犬吠,
风雪夜归人 — 'Dusk, the dark mountains far; cold sky, the white thatched cottage bare. At the brushwood gate a dog barks — a traveler returning in wind and snow.' Four lines that became a fixture of Chinese landscape painting.
