Designed in 1912 under the 13th Dalai Lama and adopted as the flag of Tibet (
西藏 Xīzàng) until 1959. The two mythological snow lions (
狮子 shīzi) symbolize fearless joy; the flame jewel they hold represents the three jewels of Buddhism. Possessing or displaying the flag inside the PRC can lead to detention, so it appears almost exclusively at overseas Tibetan rallies.
