The Eastern Han Chen Lin (陈琳, d. 217) served both Yuan Shao and later Cao Cao. His 《为袁绍檄豫州》 — a scathing open letter denouncing Cao Cao — reportedly cured Cao's migraine when he read it, he was so impressed he later pardoned Chen Lin and employed him.

The contemporary 陈琳 (1970–2009) was one of the first post-reform mainland female pop singers to go national. Her death in 2009 shocked the industry.
