Same vegetable as 空心菜 (kōngxīncài) and 蕹菜 (wèngcài). 通心菜 is the more common term in southern China and overseas Chinese communities; 空心菜 dominates in the north and online. The 'tong-xin' (通心 'pass-through-heart') name describes its hollow stems.
