语录 is the genre name for a collection of a teacher's recorded sayings — a Chinese tradition going back to 《
论语》 (The Analects), which preserves Confucius's spoken teachings as taken down by his disciples. The format was later used in Chan/Zen Buddhist
语录 of meditation masters and, most famously in the 20th century, 《
毛主席语录》 (Quotations from Chairman Mao) — the 'Little Red Book'.
