At Buddhist and Taoist temples, a worshipper shakes a (bamboo cylinder) until a numbered stick falls out (求签), then exchanges the number for a slip of poetic text (). A temple clerk or 师父 reads the slip and applies it to the seeker's question — that reading is 解签.
