角 (jiǎo) = 'angle/corner', 尺 (chǐ) = 'ruler'. Literally 'angle ruler' — a ruler for angles. Useful: 三角尺 (sānjiǎochǐ) is the triangular set square; 角尺 by itself usually means the L-shaped carpenter's square.
