history

Historically 西洋 referred to the countries bordering the Indian Ocean (from a Chinese perspective). Zheng He's famous voyages (1405-1433) are called 下西洋 (xià Xīyáng, 'sailing to the Western Seas'). Today it means Europe and North America.
