history
The name comes from 苏轼's line 欲把西湖比西子, "I would liken West Lake to Xizi", which compares the lake to the beauty 西施, also called 西子. Poems, songs and shop signs use 西子湖 when they want the lake to sound lovely; in everyday speech it is just 西湖.
