The grass radical caps 葬 with three blades of vegetation, picturing the matted plants that originally covered a corpse laid in the wild. It is the indexing radical and groups 葬 with 花, 草, 苗, 菜, 葛 — the whole green family.
Middle component is 死 — the corpse beside a kneeling mourner, here supplying the central meaning. The early graph showed a body buried in tall grass; 死 makes that explicit. Same character family: 葬礼 funeral, 殡 lying in state.
Two hands at the bottom respectfully support the body during the burial. 廾 always pictures a pair of cupped palms raised together, marking ritual handling — the same gesture lives in 弄, 弊, 算.
