Tips

history
陆羽 (733–804), an orphan raised in a Buddhist temple, finished it around 780. Its three scrolls and ten sections cover the tea plant, tools for picking, making and brewing tea, the regions where it grows and stories about it, and it opens 茶者,南方之嘉木也 'tea is a fine tree of the south'.
culture
In Lu Yu's day tea was pressed into cakes, ground and boiled, not steeped, and his book helped make tea drinking an art in China and later in Japan. He is honoured as 茶圣, the Sage of Tea, and Tang tea merchants already kept little porcelain figures of him for luck.
