Shaoxing has been continuously inhabited for 2,500 years. It is famous for 黄酒 (huángjiǔ, rice wine), stinky tofu, and as the setting of 《兰亭集序》, Wang Xizhi's calligraphy masterpiece written at the Orchid Pavilion in 353 CE.

Shaoxing was the ancient capital of the Yue kingdom (越国) during the Spring and Autumn period. It is also the birthplace of Lu Xun (鲁迅), modern China's most famous writer, and Zhou Enlai's ancestral home.
