Word formation is a common primary-school Chinese exercise.
Tips
culture
A staple of Chinese language workbooks: students get a single character (e.g. 山) and have to write multi-character words containing it (山水, 山顶, 火山). Sharpens the link between characters and the words they actually live in.
memory
组 (to assemble) + 词 (word) — assembling characters into a word. Easy to confuse with 造句 (zàojù, 'compose a sentence'), the next step up in difficulty.
