Almost always appears in the four-character phrase 索然无味 (suǒrán wú wèi, "dull and flavorless," usually of writing) or 兴致索然 (xìngzhì suǒrán, "interest evaporated"). Standalone 索然 outside these collocations is rare in modern speech.
