符箓 are the strange, calligraphic symbols you see plastered on doors in jiangshi (hopping vampire) movies. Drawn in cinnabar on yellow paper, they're treated as written commands binding spirits — central to popular Taoist practice and to a whole genre of Chinese horror cinema.
