Tips

history
Attested in oracle-bone inscriptions and 《诗经·小雅·鹿鸣》 ('吹笙鼓簧') one of the oldest Chinese instruments. Its free-reed mechanism (air vibrating a metal tongue) was carried west along the Silk Road and is the direct ancestor of the Western harmonium, accordion and harmonica.

Components

radical
⺮ zhú
bamboo (top radical form of 竹)
Top bamboo radical - the compressed cap form of 竹 used above compound characters. Indexes 笙 in the bamboo-instrument family with 笛 flute, 箫 vertical flute, 笺 letter paper. A 笙 is a free-reed mouth-organ made from a cluster of bamboo pipes, so the radical is exactly literal here.
phonetic
生 shēng
to give birth; raw (here phonetic)
Bottom 生 supplies the sound - same shēng, same tone, a textbook phonetic. 生 depicts a sprout pushing up from the ground. Same sound family includes 牲 livestock, 性 nature, 姓 surname. Here the meaning of 生 is not active; pure auditory hook on a deeply familiar character.

Stroke Order
