In contemporary Chinese
直销 has two distinct senses depending on context: (1) factory-direct sales (
工厂直销,
厂家直销) — a positive selling-point meaning 'no middleman'; (2) the legally regulated MLM/direct-sales industry (Amway, Mary Kay etc.) governed by the
直销管理条例 (2005). The illegal version is
传销 (chuánxiāo), pyramid scheme — Chinese law draws a sharp line between the two.
