In contemporary Chinese 直销 has two distinct senses depending on context: (1) factory-direct sales (工厂直销, 厂家直销), a positive selling-point meaning 'no middleman'; (2) the legally regulated MLM/direct-sales industry (Amway, Mary Kay etc.) governed by the 直销管理条例 (2005). The illegal version is 传销, pyramid scheme, Chinese law draws a sharp line between the two.
mistakes
Don't confuse 直销 (legal direct sales) with 传销 (illegal pyramid scheme). Mixing them up is socially loaded, 传销 has a strong negative/criminal connotation in mainland China.
