From the Sui dynasty onward, the empire's capitals depended on grain shipped north along the
漕运 (cáoyùn) system. The
漕河 — the canal network, with the Grand Canal
大运河 at its center — was so strategically important that it had its own dedicated officials (
漕运总督) and garrisons. When the canal silted, dynasties starved.
