In the early hours of 13 September 1971 the plane carrying 林彪 came down in the grassland near the town, killing all nine on board. The event is known as the 九一三事件.
usage
汗 is read hán here, as in 可汗 'khan': the Mongolian name means 'high khan'. Since 2013 the town's official name has been Chinggis City, after Genghis Khan (成吉思汗).
